For coding purpose neonatal care codes are of two categories. Codes 99460 – 99463 are for E/M services related to care of normal neonates. Codes 99468 – 99469 are for neonatal critical care E/M services.
· For normal neonates initial hospital or birthing center care per day use 99460
· Use code 99461 for initial care, per day, E/M or new born infant seen in other than hospital or birthing center.
· Use code 99462 is used for subsequent care per day of normal new born.
· Use code 99463 for discharge day care of normal new born when admitted & discharged on the same day.
· Use code 99468 for initial inpatient critical care of neonates age 28 days or less.
