How much exercise do you need to lower blood pressure?
By admin | January 27, 2008
The answer can be "not very much"! You don’t have to adopt the lifestyle of a saint in order to get lower blood pressure. If you lead a sedentary life almost any regular increase in physical activity can have a positive effect on high blood pressure. In fact, if you’re out of shape anything more strenuous than brisk walking can actually raise your blood pressure and it brings other risks as well. And, no matter what shape you’re in, weightlifting and other anaerobic exercise is out if you have elevated blood pressure.
So you can cancel that gym membership you rushed out to get when you got back from the doctor’s office. You don’t need it - not yet anyway. To lower high blood pressure you’re better off walking a half hour to an hour a day, or the equivalent of gardening, dancing, yoga or other gentle exercise. It won’t take long to see a difference in blood pressure.
