What is the Best Bird Dog Breed?

A friend of mine is interested in purchasing a hunting dog for his son. While researching the various breeds of bird dogs he quickly became overwhelmed with the amount of information out there. I decided to lend him a hand and help him sort through all the information online about bird dogs. One thing I found that surprised me was that many people seek out popular breeds like Labrador retrievers and English Springer Spaniels for both hunting purposes and as a family pet. I guess the old school thought that hunting dogs should be left outside in the kennel run is not as popular as it once was. I can see that, my friend was also looking for a dog that could play double duty as a bird dog and a family dog. Any suggestions on breed choices?
