Fencing In The Movies

It seems that I have seen quite a few movies that showed people fencing. It looked like it might be fun, but it looked like you need a lot of fencing equipment. The uniforms looked like they were kind of hot, as the people are always all sweaty at the end of a fencing match in the movies. It also seems like when they show fencing in the movies that the people are always fencing with an epee, and not with a foil or sabre. Is the epee much more popular, or is this just a thing the movies do?
